The influence of surface deflection on flexible pavements with low resistance subgrade
Keywords:
Vertical strain, Weak subgrade, Subgrade reinforcementAbstract
One of the most common problems that affect flexible pavement design in Brazil is the high initial deformation of new layers, especially with weak subgrades. This study analyzes structural responses when the pavement layers and subgrade lose integrity. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to examine how changes in stiffness parameters (modulus and thickness) influence pavement behavior and, consequently, its lifespan. Results showed that flexible pavements with weak subgrades and minimal thicknesses are fragile. Adequate subgrade reinforcement improves the pavement's stress state, reducing deflection and avoiding premature repairs.
