A comparative study of gravimetric and electrochemical techniques for the evaluation of corrosion inhibitor activity onset and efficiency in pipeline CO2 environments

Abstract

The monitoring of internal corrosion of pipelines is a critical element of maintenance programs. This study compares real-time corrosion monitoring techniques such as Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR), Harmonic Distortion Analysis (HDA), and Electrical Resistance (ER), alongside the traditional metal coupon method. Results indicate that corrosion rates obtained from LPR were overestimated, while HDA and ER presented similar results to metal coupons. The ER method proved effective in detecting the onset of corrosion protection after inhibitor injection.
