Effects of sulphidity on flexural strength of fiber-cement boards reinforced with Guadua angustifolia kunth fibers with alkaline pretreatments

Abstract

Guadua angustifolia KUNTH is a giant grass native to America with high ecological adaptability. This study evaluated alkali-pretreated fibers using Kraft pulping. The effects of sulphidity concentration in the alkaline treatment on the physical-mechanical properties of the fiber-cement boards were examined. Results showed that boards reinforced with pretreated fibers had greater flexural strength and maintained this strength after 180 days, indicating that the alkaline treatments prevented fiber degradation in the cement matrix.
