Case study and mathematical modeling in the training of engineers. Characterization of STEM skills

The article addresses the mathematical training for engineers, who require new skills to face social challenges and demands, which increasingly revolve around STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The study aims to characterize the STEM skills of first-year engineering students, using mathematical modeling as the basis of the learning process and the case method as a teaching strategy. A didactic sequence was designed in algebra and calculus topics, and the results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The students demonstrated competence in STEM skills but still showed weaknesses in interpreting mathematical solutions and designing engineering solutions, particularly in 3D representation and applying geometric properties.
