Abstract

When using piles in projects, depending on the distance between them, their behavior may interfere mutually in terms of load capacity and settlements. This study evaluates the group effect of short piles excavated in a granular soil profile typical of Fortaleza's subsoil in Ceará, Brazil. Static load tests were performed on 26 piles, grouped in sets of 2 and 4, with varying distances between them. The results showed that the piles worked primarily by lateral friction, and the group effect was observed in all investigated spacings.
