Performance of ISO P and ISO S carbide tools in hard turning of AISI 4140 under dry and MQL conditions

Abstract

The literature review shows few studies concerning the turning of hardened steels using carbide tools. This study investigates the tool-life of ISO P and ISO S grade coated carbide inserts and average roughness (Ra) of the machined surface during the hard turning of AISI 4140 steel under dry and minimum-quantity lubrication (MQL) conditions. The higher cutting speed generated lower Ra values, and dry turning resulted in lower Ra compared to MQL. The ISO S grade coated carbide insert showed low tool nose wear at a relatively high cutting speed.
