A CFD study of steam injection tubing heat losses

To increase heavy oil production, the petroleum industry uses thermal recovery methods, with steam injection being one of the most common techniques. A three-dimensional simulation of the multiphase, turbulent liquid-vapor flow along a 100 m wellbore is presented, composed of injection tubing, annular space, casing, and rock formation. The performance of insulated and non-insulated tubing is evaluated, with 80% quality steam at two different flow rates. The insulated material tubing (IMT) showed better performance, reducing heat loss and maintaining higher steam quality at the well output.
