A geographic information system for public transportation based on GTFS realtime standard

Abstract

Based on the development of the GIS SITPA Web system, a travel planner for public transport in Arica, a real-time tracking system for taxi-buses was implemented using GPS. The Geographic Information System of Transport (SIG-T) was developed using open-source software and is based on the GTFS realtime standard, allowing the visualization of the current position of taxi-buses, prediction of their arrival at bus stops, and alert messages related to route issues. This system is a low-cost solution that can be implemented in other cities to promote public transport use.
