Abstract

Food waste is a global problem affecting food security and the environment. In Chile, a significant amount of food ends up in the trash, leading to economic losses and wasted resources. This study proposes a smart modular system as an innovative solution to reduce food waste in Chilean households. Through design strategies such as eco-information, eco-feedback, and skillful design, the aim is to influence user behavior and promote sustainable practices. A thorough analysis of the global and local problem was conducted, along with a qualitative study in Chilean households to identify the causes of waste. The results led to the development of a conceptual design that efficiently organizes and stores food while providing tools for meal planning and maximizing product use. This system demonstrates the potential of Design for Sustainable Behavior (DfSB) to address the issue of food waste, contributing to more efficient resource management and improved food security.
