Effects of demand response in residential users on the reconfiguration of a distribution system considering the Colombian context

The benefits of implementing Demand Response (DR) programs in large consumers have been widely documented. However, it is necessary to explore in more detail the impacts of these programs on residential users and the benefits for distribution system operators. In this paper, the effects of DR on the reconfiguration of a distribution system considering residential users’ consumption in Colombia are determined. The demand curve of a typical residential user in Bogotá D.C. was constructed, and a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm was used to solve the reconfiguration problem. The results show that reconfiguration can significantly increase the revenues of a Network Operator, although the energy loss reduction achieved does not provide sufficient incentives to promote residential users' participation in DR programs.
