Genetic algorithm for the strategic location of a network of fire hydrants

Abstract

In Trujillo, a northern city from Peru, the number of fire hydrants is currently 497; only 10% are working in the city center. Firefighters cannot respond to emergencies in optimum time, increasing material damages and casualties due to the inoperability and non-optimum distribution of hydrants. In this research, a hydrant network was strategically located using a genetic algorithm (GA). Many solutions were evaluated, and the most efficient one was selected using a fitness function based on the distances between hydrants and a common point. The best solution reduces emergency response time and suggests a strategic redistribution of hydrants.
