Centile-based decompensation early warning score system in pediatric inpatients

Abstract

International studies show that including Early Warning Score (EWS) systems in clinical care processes allows caregivers to anticipate patient decompensations and make timely decisions. This study developed a pediatric EWS based on the statistical properties of historical vital sign records, using a supervised scoring method. 178,970 vital sign records from 4,104 pediatric patients were obtained, generating a model that predicts unplanned ICU transfers, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.71 in the best case. The results help to correct normal vital sign ranges in the expert-based model currently in operation.
